Colour is one of the most important and powerful elements of design as it can affect the mood, energy and perception of a space. Whether you want to create a cosy, relaxing or inspiring space, there are some basic principles you can follow to achieve the look you want.
First, you need to understand the colour wheel. The colour wheel is a tool that shows the relationship between primary colours (red, yellow and blue), secondary colours (orange, green and purple) and tertiary colours (mixtures of primary and secondary colours). The colour wheel can help you create different colour schemes, such as;
- Monochromatic: using different shades and tones of one colour
- Analogous: using colours that are next to each other on the colour wheel
- Complementary: using colours that are opposite each other on the colour wheel
- Triadic: using three colours that are equally spaced on the colour wheel
- Tetradic: using four colours that form a rectangle on the colour whee
Secondly, you need to consider the temperature of the colours. Colours can be classified as warm or cool depending on how they make you feel. Warm colours (such as red, orange and yellow) tend to make you feel warm, excited and energetic. Cool colours (such as blue, green and purple) tend to make you feel cool, calm and relaxed. You can use warm or cool colours to create different effects in your room, for example;
- Warm colours can make a room feel more cosy, inviting and intimate
- Cool colours can make a room feel larger, airier and calmer
- Warm and cool colours can create contrast and balance in a room.
Thirdly, you need to think about the value and intensity of the colours. Value is the lightness or darkness of a colour, while intensity is the brightness or dullness of a colour. You can use value and intensity to create different effects in your room, such as;
- Light colours can make a room feel more open, bright and cheerful.
- Dark colours can make a room feel more enclosed, cosy and dramatic
- Bright colours can make a room feel more lively, vibrant and stimulating
- Dull colours can make a room feel more subdued, elegant and sophisticated
- Light and dark colours can create contrast and depth in a room
- Bright and dull colours can create harmony and interest in a room
Finally, have fun and experiment with different colours. Colour is not a rigid science, but an art form that allows you to express yourself and your creativity. Don’t be afraid to try new things, mix and match colours or break some rules. The most important thing is that you enjoy the process and the result.
